The current and emerging demands coming from the labor market and the productive development of the country, constitute a relevant reference for the education proposal of the USM. The professional training from a Competency Based Curriculum Approach (ECBC) proposes to develop an academic-training process that adapts to the changing demands of the labor market, as well as to the different needs of subjects with heterogeneous characteristics, interests, attributes and starting points. The implementation of the ECBC is achieved on the basis of ideas and practices in permanent development.
One of the permanent concerns of the University has been to establish mechanisms to prepare qualified people for the future needs of the country and for the vertiginous development of technologies. This is why the ECBC, which seeks to ensure that professionals and graduates from the University meet the requirements for relevant professional practice, has been adopted. This approach is focused on the identification of learning outcomes that define the educational process towards the achievement of such learning, providing opportunities for students to demonstrate the progress and levels achieved in their training process. In this sense, the curriculum constitutes the instrument through which the formative proposal of a study program and a graduate program is organized, determining the conceptual, structural and operational aspects of the training context, in which the degree work, dissertations and graduate theses play a relevant role.
The curricular components are conceived, designed, organized and executed in order to generate the best conditions for the students’ learning by virtue of the development of the competencies of the pre-established graduation profile.
In order to identify the transversal competencies with a distinctive seal of our graduates, the foundational values, plus a broad consultation with students, graduates, professors and employers in the period 2012-2014 were taken into account.
In the process, some competencies, that distinguish the University graduate and others that should be developed according to the weaknesses detected by the environment, were recognized.
The competencies that were determined as our University’s Signature Competencies are:
Students are responsible for ensuring that the knowledge acquired and skills developed are placed at the service of the community and society in pursuit of a common good over the individual, consistent with the legacy outlined in the will of Mr. Federico Santa Maria Carrera.
Students solve complex problems, analyzing and evaluating effective and efficient solutions, based on their impact on the organization, people and the environment.
Students execute professional activities with excellence, allowing them to face the challenges that arise, guided by continuous learning, systematic self-evaluation and a culture of quality.
Students develop technological and management improvements and innovations, generating opportunities to provide a satisfactory response to organizational and social needs.
The USM students use the information and communication technologies in project management, problem solving and how to collaborate with others
